Veterinary Services: vaccinations

Vaccinations and heartworm prevention

In general vaccinations are due every year, if you own a dog you may also want to check that their heartworm control is also up to date.

Vaccinations, parasite control and health check-ups play an important role in the long term wellness of our patients.
For dogs, we offer a C5 vaccination that protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Bordatella.

For Indoor-Only Cats, we offer a F4 vaccination that protects against 1. Feline panleucopaenia, a potentially a deadly enteritis causing diarrhoea; 2. Feline viral rhinotracheitis; 3. Feline calicivirus; and 4. Feline chlamydiosis. For cats that venture outdoors, we offer an F4 +FIV vaccination that protects against the above and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

A thorough health check is undertaken at the time of your pet’s annual vaccination. Sometimes we can detect a problem of which you might not be aware. This is also an opportunity to discuss your pet’s diet, weight and behaviour or any other questions that may concern you. You will also receive advice on the control and eradication of fleas, worms, heartworm, ticks, and various other creepy crawlies. Quotes for Vaccinations can be given over the counter/phone.
Veterinary Services: Surgical Procedures

Surgical procedures - desexing, soft tissue, orthopaedic, emergency

Our clinic is equipped to perform most types of surgery with modern anaesthetic machines, respiratory monitors and more.

Our veterinarians perform a vast range of operations ranging from desexing and lump removals to exploratory surgery, caesarians, and fracture repairs.
Our surgical area allows our friendly veterinarians to perform sterile surgeries and we use the safest modern anaesthetics. As with human surgery, our veterinarians scrub up, wear surgical gowns and safety protection as well as using autoclaved instruments throughout the procedure. The surgical bed is heated for the comfort and wellness of our patients who are continually monitored. A fully trained veterinary nurse assists the veterinarian throughout the procedure.

Surgical desexing involves removal of part of the reproductive system of animals whilst under a general anaesthetic. There are many benefits of this procedure and any of our vets will be happy to discuss these in detail with you.
Veterinary Services: Health Screening

Health screening and wellness examinations

One of the most important services our practice offers are routine check ups.
Annual checkups are important to identify any potential health problems and are a great time to make sure all vaccinations and parasite control treatment is up to date.
Veterinary Services: Microchipping

Microchipping

Microchips help avoid the heartache of losing your best friend and is also the law for any pet over the age of 3 months
A microchip contains a code that is linked to a national registry. This means if your pet is ever lost, we can scan your pet for the microchip and access your contact details from the National Registry. We have the scanning technology to be able to easily identify your pet if they are brought to our practice. Each year we successfully reunite many lost pets with their owners with the assistance of microchip technology.
Veterinary Services: Pets Dentistry

Dentistry

A dental check-up may highlight the need for cleaning, polishing, tooth extraction or even just a change in diet. Remember, your pet will feel and function better and may also live longer with healthy teeth and gums.
It’s true that a high percentage of aging animals suffer from some degree of periodontal disease. This is a condition in which bacteria attack the gum tissue causing a foul odour, yellowish-brown crusts of tartar around the gum line and even pain and bleeding when your pet eats or you touch its gums.
Veterinary Services for Small Animals: X-Ray and Ultrasound

X-rays + Ultrasounds

Non-invasive ways to gain a better understanding of what's going on inside your pet's body.
Our digital x-ray facilities allow us to investigate animal injuries and health problems, and receive a high quality and instant image.

Ultrasound is a technique that provides us with a non-invasive way of scanning your pet’s body system without surgery.
This equipment is used for the diagnosis and treatment of animals and humans by using high frequency sound waves. Sound waves are converted into an image and this is displayed on a small monitor screen so we can gain a better understanding of what is going on inside your pet’s body.
Veterinary Services for Small Animals: Intensive Care

Intensive Care

Including hospitalization and isolation rooms for contagious diseases.

There are various reasons why our patients are hospitalised including recovery from illness and post-operative care. We have hospital cages for cats and dogs as well as an isolation area. Our hospital cages are supplied with fresh bedding that is made from a special material that stays warm, dry and fluffy!
Veterinary Services for Small Animals: Clinical Pathology

Clinical Pathology and In-House Lab

We are able to perform various pathology tests such as blood tests within the hospital, thus giving faster diagnosis and treatment. For more detailed testing we engage the services of a specialist laboratory.
Not only can we perform blood testing at your appointment, we also regularly utilise our microscope in our laboratory area.

We will routinely take a swab or samples from your dog/cat’s ears or skin and look at these under the microscope to be able to treat specifically the infection they may have.

We can also aspirate lumps and bumps and examine cells under the microscope to determine what the lump may be.

Parasite and Nutritional Advice and Treatments

Fleas, ticks, heartworm and worms are all nasty endo and ecto parasites that can harm your pet.

PARASITE ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for FLEAS

Fleas

You don’t want these blood-sucking parasites on your pet or in your home. We can help keep them away or help you get rid of them if they’ve already found their way inside.
Fleas can cause problems for pets ranging from minor to life-threatening. Not only can these parasites cause severe itching, irritation, and allergies, but they can also transmit tapeworms and diseases. Fleas can infest dogs, cats, mice, and rats. And fleas don’t just stay on pets; they can bite people, too.
PARASITE ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for TICKS

Ticks

Ticks are commonly found on the east coast of Australia. They prefer bushland, scrubby areas and need humidity and warm temperatures to develop.
These parasites aren’t just a nuisance; they can cause serious—and sometimes deadly—disease such as tick paralysis. Ticks can hide easily under your pet’s fur, so as an added measure of protection, we recommend checking your pet for ticks.

The best method for keeping ticks off your pet is by keeping your pet on a tick preventive. Even indoor-only pets are at risk because ticks can hitch a ride inside on your clothing or shoes. Tick preventives are safe and highly effective at controlling ticks and the diseases they carry.
PARASITE AND NUTRITIONAL ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for HEARTWORM

Heartworm

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to keep your dog or cat safe: by administering monthly heartworm preventives or an annual injection.
Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm infection when they bite your pet. These parasites can severely and can fatally damage the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Some pets may not show any signs of infection. Treatment for heartworm infection is far more expensive than prevention.
PARASITE AND NUTRITIONAL ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for WORMS

Worms

There are several types of internal parasites that can cause problems in your pets. These include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
It is important for your pets to be treated for intestinal worms not only to help prevent an infection but also to prevent you and the rest of your family from becoming infected. Worms are a zoonotic parasite, which means they can be transmitted from pets to people. By ensuring that your pet is properly treated, you can keep your entire family safe. Puppies and kittens must be treated for potential worm infestations more regularly than adults. A hookworm infestation for example, can be fatal in puppies.
PARASITE AND NUTRITIONAL ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Weight management

Feeding a complete, balanced and appropriate diet to your pet is a must for a long and healthy life.
Our veterinarians and our nurses are trained to give expert advice regarding nutrition. Obesity can cause many health problems for dogs and cats. If you feel your pet may be overweight, you can book a free weight loss appointment with a nurse. Alternatively your vet can give you advice during your annual health check consultation.

Feel free to visit the clinic for a friendly weigh-in at any time.
PARASITE AND NUTRITIONAL ADVICE AND TREATMENTS for OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis management

Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is a progressive disease.

Appropriate multi-modal treatment can slow down the progression of disease, ease the pain and improve quality of life.
Preventing the development of osteoarthritis through diet, exercise, and the use of protective joint supplements is the best way to keep your dog's joints healthy. We work with you and your pet to keep them as comfortable as possible and improve their quality of life and reduce their pain as much as possible.

Other Small Animal Services

Other Small Animal Services: Animal Behavior

Animal behaviour examination and advice

Behavioural problems can be complex and sadly not all can be resolved.
What’s important is to get advice as soon as the problem behaviour starts. We can offer advice on training issues and will do our best to advise on other areas where we can or direct you to further help if, for example, a full-time behaviourist would be beneficial.

Our equine, cattle and livestock services include comprehensive on-farm service for large animals (call out/farm visits). We travel far and wide and have set zoning for our call-out consultations to have a standardised fee every time.

LARGE ANIMAL SERVICES: Disease Investigations

Disease investigations, prevention programs and advice

An unfortunate aspect of livestock production which is only ever just around the corner is disease & death... "Where there are livestock, there are dead stock".

Whilst some diseases tend to be limited to individuals only with minimal financial impact, others can affect large numbers with catastrophic consequences.
We are always available to investigate causes of disease and death in your animals, whether 1 is affected or 101.

Current market prices mean that in many circumstances investigating the causes of illness or death is economically viable in order to prevent or manage current or prevent future outbreaks.

The keys to identifying the cause of disease are clinical history, physical examination of live animals, post-mortem examination of dead animals and laboratory testing.

In many circumstances reaching a final definitive diagnosis may not be possible with no access to fresh carcases or limitations of certain tests however many important diseases are usually ruled out in the process which provides value from the results.
LARGE ANIMAL SERVICES: Small Ruminant Consultation

Small Ruminant Consultation

Our healthcare team offers a variety of care options for small ruminants, including goats and sheep.
We can help your small ruminants by performing disease investigations. Discussing disease prevention programs & advice.

CATTLE SERVICES: Bull Testing

Bull testing (ACV BBSE)

Bull Breeding Soundness Examinations (BBSE) are a key part of ensuring that your bull team is fit for the task and to minimise the risk of a poor conception rate due to bull failure.
As part of a standard BBSE, the sexual organs (testes/penis) are examined, a semen sample is collected and assessed crush side for motility and sent to a laboratory for morphology (percentage of normal/abnormal sperm cells) and conformation/structure/gait are assessed.

All our clients’ bulls are assessed according to ACV guidelines and reported Electronically in bull reporter.
CATTLE SERVICES: Bull Semen Collection for Freezing

Bull semen collection for freezing

Custom semen collection is the collection and processing of bull semen carried out on property then forwarded to a processing centre for freezing into straws.
This process involves:

  • Cleaning the bull’s prepuce

  • Microscopic examination of the ejaculate
  • Dilution of the semen with egg/milk extender
  • Packaging and dispatch to the processing centre
CATTLE SERVICES: Cow Pregnancy Testing

Cow pregnancy testing (ACV tags, manual)

Pregnancy diagnosis is one of the simplest and most cost-effective management tools for producers. Less productive animals can be identified for sale and as such help to increase the overall fertility of the herd.
We are also accredited examiners in the Australian Cattle Veterinarians PregCheck scheme allowing pregnancy tail tags to be applied (these need to be ordered if required).
Chamberlain Road Vet Clinic addresses calving problems

Calving problems

Calving season is a busy time of year for cattle producers and it is a critical step toward a productive year. The first rule is frequent observation of the cows due to calve, especially the first calf heifers.
There are many different causes for a cow not to make progress during calving such as a malpresented or oversized calf, foetal deformity, uterine torsion, or the cow’s inability to push. Our veterinarians are well trained to identify the problem and provide the appropriate solution for you and your animal.

Adequate facilities make a great difference in providing assistance at calving and also address occupational health and safety issues.
CATTLE SERVICES: Cattle Artificial Insemination Pregnancy Testing

Cattle Artificial Insemination programs

Artificial insemination (AI) is becoming a more widespread tool within the beef industry in Australia. Once seen as being limited to use within the stud industry, it has rapidly gained in popularity amongst commercial beef producers in the past decade or so.
Artificial insemination involves firstly the process of synchronizing the females in the program to all cycle at the same time and then secondly the insemination itself. AI is an effective way to increase productivity and profitability by increasing the quality of the genetics in the herd, to get the desired production traits.
CATTLE SERVICES: Cattle Vaccinations

Cattle Vaccinations

When vaccines are used correctly, they can reduce animal losses substantially through prevention of disease in your animals. The diseases vaccines can prevent cause reduced production, fertility or death in cattle which cause significant economic losses.
There are several vaccines for cattle on the market. We can help you to develop a vaccine plan that incorporates what you need for your herd.
CATTLE SERVICES: Cattle Crush and Yards at Clinic

Cattle crush and yards at clinic

We have secure and safe facilities including cattle loading ramp, yards and undercover cattle crush.
We commonly use these facilities for many general husbandry and surgical procedures in cattle.

We can also facilitate artificial insemination programs (AI) undertaken at our facilities, enabling producers the convenience of dropping off and picking up when ready.

Another common procedure available is freeze branding.
